![]() ![]() The headlining feature, of course, is the Retina display. Unlike that machine, the new Air does have a Touch ID sensor, the first time we have seen it divorced from the Touch Bar. The new internals are betrayed on the outside by a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports, 1 meaning the MacBook Air has the same IO as that weird Touch Bar-less 13-inch MacBook Pro. That is a bummer, and I guess it helps explain the two-port MacBook Pro sticking around. Update: It seems that this CPU may be a 5W chipset, like found in the 12-inch MacBook. The machine supports up to 16 GB of RAM, and up to 1.5 TB of SSD storage, made extra speedy and secure by Apple’s T2 chip, which seems to be spreading to all new Macs. In fact, both SKUs are clocked at 1.6GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz. It’s powered by dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processors. The Air may look old, but if you peek under the covers, it’s a whole new machine. ![]() Like the new Mac mini, it’s built from 100% recycled aluminum. It’s still lightweight, now weighing in at just 2.75 pounds. The new MacBook Air retains its iconic wedge shaped chassis, wrapped around a 13.3-inch screen. The formula hasn’t changed all that much. And with all-day battery life, MacBook Air is your perfectly portable, do-it-all notebook. The iconic wedge is created from 100 percent recycled aluminum, making it the greenest Mac ever. Available in silver, space gray, and gold, the new thinner and lighter MacBook Air features a brilliant Retina display, Touch ID, the latest-generation keyboard, and a Force Touch trackpad. The most loved Mac is about to make you fall in love all over again. While not good by any metric, it’s a far cry better than Apple’s other offerings. It’s a thing, and it comes in silver, space gray and gold. Overall, the MacBook Air Retina scored a 3 out of 10 for repairability. Also, the Air continues Apple’s annoying trend of soldering both the RAM and storage into place, making upgrades impossible. For one, the butterfly keyboard is fully integrated into the keyboard deck, which makes replacing a broken keyboard difficult (and potentially expensive). The MacBook Air Retina still has some problems consistent with Apple laptops. By pulling these tabs, users can remove the glue holding the battery in place and should be able to more easily replace an expired power pack. Perhaps most importantly for device longevity, there are now adhesive pull tabs underneath the battery. Additionally, the two Thunderbolt 3 ports are on a separate logic board, which should make replacing a broken port relatively simple. ![]() The membrane should keep dust particles out their intrusion was likely the root cause of the MacBook Pro’s keyboard woes. The keyboard of the new MacBook Air Retina uses a plastic membrane underneath the keycaps, likely in response to the keyboard failure crisis that has plagued recent MacBook Pros. Apple seems to have learned from their mistakes, at least a little bit, with the MacBook Air Retina. The iFixIt team gave the 2018 MacBook Pro an abysmal 1 out of 10 in their “Repairability Score” metric this past summer, citing the fact that every component is soldered or glued into place and, thus, irreplaceable. While the notebook is by no means easy to disassemble, it is a far cry more accessible than the latest MacBook Pros. The crew over at iFixIt got their hands on the new MacBook Air Retina this week and set to work tearing the laptop apart. ![]()
